Artist

Jens Hartmann

Jens Hartmann is a photographer based in Frankfurt, Germany. He works in landscape — remote terrain, recorded as it is.

Statement

The work treats landscape as a record, not a view. Rather than describe a place or arrange its best light, the photographs hold what the ground actually is: surface, weather, exposed material, scale. What the scenic image leaves out is the subject.

Method

Hartmann works in series, over long periods in a single terrain. Photographs are now made on a Fuji GFX 100 II — a medium-format camera that records the full field at high resolution, in a 4:3 frame, without crop or correction toward a more flattering image. Works are printed as archival pigment prints on Hahnemühle fine art paper, at the size the work is meant to be seen, signed and numbered.
